Nausea/ Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting are common symptoms that can be caused by a wide range of conditions. Benign causes of nausea and vomiting include food poisoning, viral gastroenteritis, motion sickness, and indigestion. More serious causes of nausea and vomiting include pancreatitis, ulcer, gastroparesis, and cancer.

If you are experiencing nausea and vomiting, it is important to see a gastroenterologist for proper evaluation and treatment. Your gastroenterologist will ask you about your symptoms, medical history, and conduct a physical exam. They may also order certain tests to help diagnose the cause of your nausea and vomiting.

These tests may include:

  • Blood tests: to check for infection or inflammation

  • Urine tests: to check for infection or kidney problems

  • Stool tests: to check for infection or digestive problems

  • Imaging tests: such as CT scan or ultrasound to look at the abdomen

  • Endoscopy: a procedure to look inside the digestive tract using a small camera

It is important to see your gastroenterologist if your symptoms are persistent or severe, or if you have other accompanying symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever, or weight loss. Your gastroenterologist will work with you to determine the cause of your symptoms and develop a treatment plan to alleviate them.
