CT Scan

A CT scan (computed tomography scan) is a type of medical imaging test that uses x-rays and a computer to create detailed images of the inside of the body. CT scans are commonly used to evaluate a wide range of conditions, including abdominal pain.

CT scans are particularly useful for evaluating the abdomen and pelvis because they can provide detailed images of the organs and tissues in the abdominal cavity, including the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, kidneys, spleen, intestines, prostate, ovaries, and uterus. They can also help to identify abnormalities such as tumors, cysts, or inflammatory conditions.

CT scans are important tools in the evaluation of abdominal pain because they can help to diagnose both benign and serious conditions. They can be used to diagnose conditions such as appendicitis, diverticulitis, cholecystitis, pancreatitis, ovarian cysts, and kidney stones, as well as more serious conditions such as cancer.

To prepare for a CT scan, you may be asked to remove any jewelry or other metallic objects that you are wearing. You may also be asked to drink a contrast solution or receive an injection of contrast dye, which helps to highlight certain structures in the body and improve the accuracy of the images.

It is important to see your gastroenterologist for proper evaluation and treatment if you are experiencing abdominal pain. Your gastroenterologist will be able to determine if a CT scan is necessary and provide you with more information on the procedure.
