Blood in Stool

If you are experiencing blood in your stool, it is important to contact your gastroenterologist as soon as possible. Blood in the stool can be a sign of a serious medical condition and should not be ignored.

There are several possible causes of blood in the stool, including:

  • Peptic ulcer disease

  • Gastric cancer

  • Colon cancer

  • Crohn's disease

  • Ulcerative colitis

  • Diverticular disease

  • Hemorrhoids

  • Infection

  • Ischemic colitis (reduced blood flow to the colon)

Each of these conditions can have different symptoms and require different treatment, so it is important to receive an accurate diagnosis from a medical professional. Your gastroenterologist will perform a thorough evaluation to determine the cause of the blood in your stool. This may include a physical examination, laboratory tests, and imaging studies such as an X-ray, CT scan, upper endoscopy and/or colonoscopy. Based on the findings of these tests, your gastroenterologist will be able to make a diagnosis and recommend the appropriate treatment.

It is important to remember that blood in the stool is not a normal occurrence and should not be ignored. If you are experiencing blood in your stool, do not try to self-diagnose or self-treat. Contact our office as soon as possible for proper evaluation and treatment.
