Constipation

If you are experiencing constipation, it is important to contact your gastroenterologist for an evaluation. Constipation is a common condition that can be caused by a variety of factors such as lack of water intake, poor fiber intake, lack of exercise, or irritable bowel syndrome. While these are the most common causes of constipation, it is also possible that it could be related to a more serious underlying condition such as a large polyp or tumor, colon cancer, narrowing or blockage from inflammatory bowel disease, or diverticular disease.

Your gastroenterologist will perform a thorough evaluation to determine the cause of your constipation. This may include a physical examination, laboratory tests, imaging studies such as an X-ray,  a CT scan, and/or a colonoscopy. Based on the findings of these tests, your gastroenterologist will be able to make a diagnosis and recommend the appropriate treatment.

While constipation is a common condition, it is not a normal or healthy condition and should not be ignored. If you are experiencing constipation, you may be able to manage it with over-the-counter (OTC) laxatives, fiber supplements, increasing your water intake, and exercising regularly. However, if you do not experience significant improvement in your symptoms after trying these measures, it is important to contact your gastroenterologist for further evaluation. Do not try to self-diagnose or self-treat constipation. Contact our office as soon as possible for proper evaluation and treatment.
